Following your leader to fulfil your calling
2Kings 1&2
Biblical principal: – The teaching is focusing upon what our attitude as Christians should be towards God and God’s house.
The initial verses of the first chapter talk about Ahab and his son Ahaziah. Ahaziah is following in his father’s footsteps in his wickedness and continued to give glory to false gods. After an accident he was bedridden and he sent for prophets of Baalzebub the false god to prophecy to him regarding his recovery.
The father’s example today will determine the footsteps of his sons tomorrow. Every step taken by fathers should be taken with the intention of helping his sons and daughters tomorrow. God in His mercy has given us His Word to guide us how He wants us to live.
Fathers need to be aware of every step they take, every word they speak and every action they make. Your children are watching you and will learn how you treat with your wife, how you behave with people, who your friends are and with whom you fellowship. That is why your life should reflect a life of quality praising God.
God is very angry with king Ahaziah for consulting with false gods and sends Elijah His prophet to prophesy to him about his condition leading to death.
Prophet Elijah is fearless of authorities to speak the words of the Lord. The power to speak fearlessly comes from the Holy Spirit. We need to ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit daily to be able to stand and speak boldly the Word of the Lord with His Power. When preachers become man pleasers instead of God pleasers, churches become cold and lukewarm.
Versus 9-13 talks about how believers should not pray for baptism of fire as this baptism is for meant for unbelievers who reject Christ. We also learnt that humility is the best step to find God’s favor but it is the most difficult thing to have when we are blessed with everything in life. It is on our knees that we will see the mercy of God.
We need to be very sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit like Elijah who is quick to obey the Lord when He tells him to stay silent or when He leads him to go and speak. At the same time when we come to the house of God, our desire should be to listen to what God is saying to us rather than what the preacher thinks or what is pleasant to our ears. If we delight in listening to the words of man rather than God, we will go out into the world and turn out wretched sinners instead of being transformed into Godly children of the Almighty.
In chapter 2, after the fulfilment of the prophesy on Ahaziah’s death, Elijah is preparing himself to be taken up. Elijah knew that Elisha would go through a difficult process if he followed him from Gilgal, to Bethel, to Jericho, and then to Jordan. So, he discourages Elisha from following him. But Elisha is persistent on following the man of God and to follow God. In today’s world it is very easy for people to get offended by other people in the church or the preaching from the pulpit. They feel betrayed and due to the offence, they opt for an easy solution by stopping to go to church and stopping to serving God. Church is not about us but it is all about Jesus. Among the 12 apostles one betrayed Christ for some money. But the 11 didn’t forsake Jesus but kept their eyes upon Him. We need to follow Christ and keep our eyes focused upon Him. Peter while walking on water moved his focus on his surrounding and began to drown. Many of us drown in our spiritual life because we move our focus to other people instead of fixing our focus onto Jesus. When we have decided to follow Jesus and no turning back, we sometimes drown because we turn to our sides which is an easy distraction.
Elisha insists on following Elijah wherever he goes and refuses to go back. Even though the sons of the prophets discouraged Elisha he refused to move his focus. Today if we want to be the one chosen by God to stand up and replace an Elijah, we need to be the person who is willing to go on God’s time from Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho and to Jordan. In humility willing to sacrifice everything like Elisha who made himself available and wanted to learn how to serve and learn everything else from Elijah. Even though Elijah himself told him not to follow him, Elisha continued to follow everything, learn everything and see everything so he could serve God better. If we need to serve God better, we need to learn this kind of diligence from Elisha.
Like the sons of the prophets who came to discourage Elisha, in today’s time the worldly people know that the Christians are talking about the Lord’s coming and the rapture is going to take place but they are not willing to obey and follow Jesus. The return of Christ and the rapture is not a fantasy but the truth and a fact.
When worldly people discourage us from following Jesus Christ, we need to speak boldly and say, “hold your peace. “
There may be many in our lives who will stand at a distance to find faults in our Christian walk. We should not be discouraged. The Lord is a forgiving God. While we are following the Lord sometimes, we may stumble and fall. But we should not stay there. We should ask the Lord for forgiveness, keep our eyes focused on Him, get up and follow the Lord again. His mercy endures forever. His grace is unmerited favor.
Elijah used his mantle for his last miracle in dividing the waters of the Jordan just like the dividing of the Red Sea. Both the men of God pass through dry land. There is a difference between those who watch from a distance and those who are baptized in the Jordan. The difference is the onlookers and those who walk with the Lord and decide to serve him.
There is a reward for those who follow the Lord till they end. And there is also a reward in following the man of God the Lord puts in our lives. Learning submission is key to be able to fulfil the will of God in this area. Those who aren’t able to submit become bitter and are not able to serve the Lord whole heartedly. Great rewards follow those who follow the Lord radically. Elisha is an example for us to be radical. When we are not going through the best time in our life, we still need to worship God. We were not worthy but God in His mercy still forgave us, He still loved us.
2Kings2:9 talks about what Elisha asks from Elijah before he is taken. He doesn’t ask for any worldly blessing, for health or for wealth. But a double portion of the spirit that was upon him. The aggressiveness, the boldness, the fearlessness, the unshakable faith, the compassionate spirit, the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of prophecy. He asked for a double portion of his Spirit to serve God better.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
We need to put God first and genuine miracles will happen before our eyes. Our God is a wonderful God. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Man may reject us, but God will forgive us and accept us. This is our God and His name is Jesus.
